The Staff Selection Commission's Combined Higher Secondary Level exam (SSC CHSL) recruits for Lower Division Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant, and Data Entry Operator posts across central government offices. It is one of the most accessible entry points into government service for 12th-pass candidates, and it rewards consistent, section-wise preparation more than last-minute cramming.
The exam runs in two tiers. Tier 1 is a single computer-based sitting of 100 objective questions, split evenly across four sections: General Intelligence, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness, 25 questions each. Because every section carries equal weight, there is no shortcut to skipping one — a candidate strong in Quant but weak in General Awareness will lose just as many marks as the reverse.
Tier 2, under the current pattern, is heavier and more varied: Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning & General Intelligence (30 questions each), English Language & Comprehension (40 questions, including a cloze passage and a reading comprehension set), General Awareness (20 questions, a separate set from Tier 1's), and Computer Knowledge (15 questions, qualifying only — it does not count toward merit but you must clear a minimum cutoff).
The single biggest mistake candidates make is treating Tier 1 and Tier 2 General Awareness as the same section. They are not: Tier 2's GA draws from an entirely separate question pool, so repeating only your Tier 1 revision leaves real gaps. Similarly, Tier 2's English section introduces comprehension-passage and cloze-test formats that Tier 1 never tests — practising only standalone grammar items will not prepare you for them.
A practical way to prepare: work through full-length, section-tagged practice sets rather than random mixed quizzes, so you can see exactly which section is pulling your score down. Camino Prep's SSC CHSL question bank is organized by the real Tier 1 and Tier 2 syllabus structure above, with bilingual (English/Hindi) instructions throughout — so you can practise in whichever language you think more clearly in, without the underlying exam content changing.

The same entry-level shape shows up well beyond India: Camino Prep also covers Turkey's KPSS Ortaogretim exam, the secondary-education-level civil service test that fills a similar role there to what SSC CHSL fills here.
